On the Sero-diagnosis of Glanders

چکیده
NOTWITHSTANDING the discovery of the glanders bacillus the diagnosis of chronic glanders has always been difficult. Later, mallein came into use, but, since the results obtained therewith did not realize all expectations, new serological methods were introduced. Of late two methods were especially used with success, the complement deviation and the agglutination. In the course of this paper these two methods will be described. Another method, the precipitine test, which I also tried, gave unsatisfactory results. The subcutaneous injection of mallein did not prove to be a complete success. Several observations were made at the Laboratory, where, with mallein, a reaction was noted in horses which were not suffering from glanders. I know of some instances where the mallein reaction, both temperature and local, was quite typical, and when the animal was subsequently killed no lesions of glanders were found. On the other hand I saw cases where an animal passed the mallein test with negative results, and yet was affected with glanders. I do not think it necessary to enter into the results of such incidents, but they were the reason for undertaking the experiments given in this paper.

Introduction Glanders is one of the oldest contagious and dangerous zoonotic diseases manifesting ulcerative granulomatous lesions on the skin and mucous membranes. Early methods possessing desirable sensitivity and specificity is important to diagnose the disease considering the just only one case report and preventing disease by identification and eradication. The present study was aimed to ...

Abstract Background: This article is a review of Glanders which is a zoonotic disease of solipeds caused by a gram negative bacterium named Burkholderia mallei. We used key words glanders, zoonotic disease and bioterrorism for search in PubMed and Google. Finally 53 eligible articles (written in English or Persian) were selected for review. Glanders is highly contagious and often fatal. It...

Glanders is a contagious disease caused by the Gram-negative bacillus Burkholderia mallei. The number of equine glanders outbreaks has increased steadily during the last decade. The disease must be reported to the Office International des Epizooties, Paris, France. Glanders serodiagnosis is hampered by the considerable number of false positives and negatives of the internationally prescribed te...

To assess the potency of the PPD-mallein produced in Brazil, five animals were from a property identified as a focus of glanders. These animals had suggestive clinical signs of the disease and the other five, from a property free from glanders, showed no clinical signs and were serology negative (control group). PPD-mallein from Burkholderia mallei was obtained by precipitation with trichloroac...
